Career Planning

At Xenia Community Schools, we are committed to ensuring our students are prepared for their future. Our goal is to help every student move from "I don't know" to a clear, confident "why” that will give them a clear sense of purpose and a roadmap for future success.

  • We believe that career satisfaction starts with self-discovery. That’s why our district utilizes YouScience, an innovative platform that moves beyond simple interest surveys.

While most tools only ask students what they like to do, YouScience uses "brain games" to uncover what students are naturally good at. By measuring aptitudes — such as spatial visualization, inductive reasoning, and numerical ability — we help students identify career paths where they have a high probability of success and satisfaction.

    • Aptitude + Interest: We bridge the gap between what a student enjoys and their natural talents.
    • Data-Driven Matching: Students receive a personalized profile connecting them to high-demand careers that fit their unique "brain map."
  • We don’t just give students a list of careers; we personally invite them to experience them. Based on their YouScience results, we curate opportunities that allow students to "test drive" different industries:

    • Career Camps & Field Trips: Immersive, hands-on experiences at local job sites with a front row view of high demand industries.
    • Coffee & Career Conversations: Informal morning meetups with local professionals.
    • Professional Panel Lunch & Learns: A chance to hear the "real world" pros and cons of various industries over lunch.
    • Job and Hiring Fairs: Smaller, targeted events where students bring their refined skills directly to employers looking to hire talented individuals.
    • Work Based Learning: Real-world learning through partnerships with local business and industry.
    • Direct Invitations: We use student strength data to reach out personally when an opportunity matches their specific talents.
  • Knowing where you want to go is step one; having the tools to get there is step two. Our district provides comprehensive support to ensure students graduate ready for the professional world:

    Feature What Students Gain
Resume Assistance Crafting a professional document that highlights strengths and YouScience aptitudes.
Interview Coaching Targeted lessons on body language, elevator pitches, and professional communication.
Mock Interviews Real-world practice with local business partners to build confidence and receive feedback.

  • We believe that "College Ready" means more than just an acceptance letter! It means leaving XHS with a strategy that will help students successfully navigate their college career, whether they are looking at a 2- or 4-year college track.

By leveraging YouScience data, we help students navigate the transition to higher education with a clear sense of direction. Instead of choosing a major based on a vague notion of something they are interested in, students use their "brain maps" to identify fields of study where they are naturally wired to excel. This data-driven approach helps minimize "major hopping" later on, ensuring students stay on track and maximize their tuition investment.

Informed Major Selection: Matching natural aptitudes (like Sequential Reasoning or Inductive Reasoning) to specific academic programs that are a good fit.

The "Describing You" Advantage: Students use personalized language from their profiles to stand out in competitive college essays and scholarship applications.

  • For students ready to dive deep into high-demand fields, we offer Career Tech Education pathways in Allied Health, Biomedical Science, Agriculture, Advanced Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Business Marketing, embedded directly within our middle and high school curriculum. These programs allow students to earn certifications and gain technical skills in industries that are hiring right now in Ohio.

  • Our district is proud to offer the Career-Based Intervention (CBI) program, a state-approved initiative from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. CBI is specifically designed for students in grade 12 who may be facing academic or economic barriers and are looking for a more personalized, hands-on approach to their education.

Our CBI Commitment: We believe every student has the potential to be a contributing member of the Ohio workforce. Through CBI, we provide the tools, the time, and the personal support to turn that potential into a reality.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • YouScience is a "discovery" platform that uses a series of brain games to measure a student’s natural aptitudes (what they are hard-wired to do well). Unlike traditional interest surveys that only ask what a student likes, YouScience reveals their untapped potential. We use this data to personally invite students to specific career events that align with their biological strengths.

  • We don’t just post a flyer on a bulletin board and hope students see it. If a student’s YouScience results show high aptitude in spatial visualization and inductive reasoning, our team may personally reach out to invite them to an engineering-focused "Coffee and Career" conversation or a manufacturing field trip. We want our students to feel seen and encouraged in the areas where they naturally shine.

  • These are low-pressure, high-impact opportunities for students to engage with professionals during the regular school day:

    • Coffee & Career: Informal morning meetups where students can chat with local leaders about their daily work life.
    • Professional Panels: Lunch-time sessions where a group of experts from a specific industry (e.g., healthcare, IT, or skilled trades) share their career journeys and answer student questions.

  • Absolutely. We offer dedicated workshops and one-on-one assistance for:

    • Resume Writing: Translating YouScience aptitudes and classroom achievements into a professional format.
    • Mock Interviews: Students can practice their interview skills with local business partners and receive constructive, real-world feedback before they ever head to a real job interview.
  • We have Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways embedded right here in our middle and high schools. These programs focus on high-demand career areas in Ohio, allowing students to start gaining technical skills and industry-recognized credentials without leaving the district.

  • Not at all! In fact, YouScience is incredibly helpful for college-bound students. By identifying their aptitudes early, they can choose a college major that fits their natural talents, potentially saving time and tuition money by avoiding major changes later on.

  • We encourage parents to sit down with their students and have them log in to their YouScience dashboard. It’s a great conversation starter! You can see their "Aptitude x Interest" matches and explore the specific "Describing You" section, which provides great language for students to use on college applications and resumes.
